Lesson Task – Market your website

Let’s say that your budget is NOK 10 000 (or 1800 $ US). Please do the following:

  • Do some research on what advertising costs. You could for instance contact your local newspaper, print shop and other websites.
  • Make a detailed list of how you would market your website. Remember to keep your budget in mind.
  • What if you had double the budget? Come up with a second marketing strategy, this time with NOK 20 000 at your disposal. (3600 $ US)
  • Come up with a viral idea. It doesn’t have to be a video; it can be guys dancing at the airport in gorilla suits. You can use ANYTHING that is at your disposal. Be creative!

The webpage promoting the city: Ålesund, presumably makes money if the visitors book different activities through their website and through marketing for the attractions. I then have to come up with a marketing strategy for a page that makes money on marketing, itself. Instragram, Facebook and magazines are good places to market for travelling, as people subconsciously might pick up the given destination when planning a travel, or might actually click on the links/search for the page. The most direct route to the page would logically be through social media, which makes this the biggest part of the marketing strategy. But as I am targeting a large age span, printed advertisements might also be wise. Seeing as the budget is quite low, there is little to no room for print displayed in subways and bus stops.. For the larger budget I also include snapchat ads as the age group 25-45 do use this platform, and the younger the more frequent.

Looking at prices from 2016 on ads displayed on monitors and so on, the prices are way above budget, and most likely package deals that suit larger companies.

Here is the adshel price list, all of which are way out of the price range.

NOK 10 000 marketing strategy:

  • Through a monthly subscription on Adline, many elements central to marketing are included. For this marketing budget the growth plan could be sufficient: NOK 1339.

Includes Google responsive ad

Facebook and Instagram ad

1 Campaign.

  • Rent of drone NOK 900 or less a day.
  • 71×164 ad in a smaller newspaper – NOK 5768 through Amedia

NOK 20 000 marketing strategy:

  • The premium plan on Adline: NOK 3390

Includes Google responsive ad

Facebook and Instagram ads

5 Campaigns

  • Snapchat Ad NOK 500 a day for 10 days
  • Drone NOK 2500
  • 71×164 ad in Romerikes Blad – 7472 through Amedia

Viral plan:

Seeing as the site promotes Ålesund, it might be relevant to film a short clip in/of the city, edit it and post it on social media: The needed equipment could simply be a drone/camera and a computer for editing, in addition to the pay to the employee doing the editing (this cost is set apart from the marketing budget)

A sufficient drone could cost somewhere between 2k and 4k. (one to between 14k to 52k seems exessive)
